The Moola! guide

Your records, your file.

Moola! doesn't need a manual — but its one big idea is worth two minutes. Everything you enter lives in a single file that belongs to you. Here's what that means, in plain words.

Where are my records kept?

In one small file called moola-data.json, inside a folder you choose the first time Moola! opens — ideally the same folder as the app. There is no account, no cloud, and nothing on our servers. The only exception is Ask: it needs your permission once, sends a summary of your records to answer a question, and keeps nothing. The file is yours to copy or back up like any other document. Saving into a file needs Chrome or Edge, so please use one of those browsers.

What does “Safe” mean at the top of the app?

It means Moola! is connected to moola-data.json and every change is saved into it the moment you make it. On later visits Moola! reopens the same file by itself — at most your browser asks once to “Allow”.

What happens if I clear my browser's cache?

Nothing is lost — your records live in the file, not the browser. Open Moola!, allow it to reopen your folder (or choose it again), and everything is back.

Can I use Moola! on two computers?

Yes. Keep your Moola! folder somewhere both computers can reach — a synced folder like Dropbox or iCloud Drive — and choose that folder on each. Just don't edit on both at the same time.

How do I move to a new computer?

Copy the whole Moola! folder — app and moola-data.json together — to the new computer. Open Moola! there and choose that folder. Your whole history comes with you.

What if I lose, move or delete my file?

Moola! notices and asks you to choose the folder again. If moola-data.json is gone, it creates a fresh one from the copy it keeps on screen. Nothing is silently overwritten: if a file differs from what's on screen, Moola! asks which to keep.

What is Ask, and does it send my records anywhere?

Ask is the small chat button in the corner of the app. Ask it how Moola! works, or about your own numbers — “How much did I spend on groceries this month?”. To answer questions about your records, Ask sends a summary of them to Lovable AI, and only after you press Allow once. It can only read your records, never change them, and the chat itself is never saved.

That's the whole guide.

Add an entry, watch it save, and you're a Moola! expert. Everything else — budgets, categories, search, goals, Ask — explains itself as you go.
